What is Postural Education and Training?

Postural Education and Training will assess and assist with issues regarding muscle imbalances and challenges controlling body positions that could potentially be causing pain or undue loading on other structures throughout the body.

This type of program will include an assessment of how one’s body is aligned and ultimately is loaded from one joint to another. Most of the actions and efforts of this program will relate to the muscles of postural control as well as how to activate them and improve the quality of movement and muscle activity in those areas.

What causes poor posture?

Poor posture is caused by reduced or limited core, spine and neck strength. It can be related to habits or repetitive tasks that promote poor posture. It can also be related to fatigue or overload of stability muscles that create an over reliance on accessory muscles to compensate.

How long does it take to correct posture?

There is no set time frame for correction of posture, but it can be affected greatly by our ability to be self aware during daily tasks as well as addressing poor postures when able.

Depending on whether the poor postures have been due to an injury or more of a long term habitual issue may also play into the duration of recovery. Overall, as with much of one’s efforts to improve physically, regular and continued efforts to address the issue of poor posture will likely significantly improve the outcome as opposed to only working on the issue for a short period of time or sporadically.

How can I check my posture?

To check your posture, pay attention to your position when completing regular daily tasks. For example, when you are:

  • Sitting at the computed desk or driving a car
  • Standing at the sink or counter while washing dishes or cooking
  • Taking a moment to check-in with yourself while walking by a mirror or a reflective window

As noted above, thinking about sections of the body that might be affected can also help. They may all play into your overall posture of the following:

  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Spine
  • Hips

What are the benefits of good posture?

The benefits of better posture or corrections in poor postures can reduce pain as well as increase activation of stability muscles throughout the body. Reducing excessive poor posture through the neck and shoulder can also have an effect on the nervous system of your body to improve sensory and motor feedback in your limbs as well as increasing your ability to recruit muscles that may have been limited with poor posture.
