Top 3 Things You Didn’t Know You Could See a Physio for
Why should you see a physiotherapist?
Most people associate physiotherapy with treatment of musculoskeletal injuries in general. However, the scope of physiotherapy is much broader and there are several areas that we can help with. If you are having trouble with any of the symptoms listed below, it might be worthwhile to check in with a physiotherapist.
#1: Concussion/Vestibular & Vertigo
-
Concussion management evaluation includes treatment for concussion and post-concussion syndrome
-
Various concussion symptoms including; headache, nausea, dizziness, memory problems
-
Vestibular conditions that can be responsible for symptoms of dizziness, nausea, difficulty with gaze stability (often with phone use, especially in the car/plane or while walking), involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) or vertigo
-
Most common cause of vertigo is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), which is often provoked by looking up, lying down flat quickly, bending forward and rolling in bed. It is a biomechanical problem that is assessed in the clinic, and if confirmed to be BPPV, can often be treated in 1-3 sessions

#2: Pelvic Floor
Evidence has shown that pelvic floor physiotherapy is highly effective as a first-line, conservative management strategy for the following:
-
Urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, increased urinary frequency (any urine leakage is not considered normal and can be treated!)
-
Pelvic organ prolapse
-
Pelvic pain management (this includes any pain in any area below the belly button and above the legs)
-
Pain with intercourse
-
Prenatal and Postnatal concerns or treatment
-
Persistent low back or sacroiliac joint pain
-
Chronic constipation
-
Post-surgery rehabilitation (hysterectomy, c-section, prostatectomy)

#3: Running Assessment
Evaluate your gait and running form on a treadmill. The goal of a running assessment is to evaluate your running technique and identify muscular imbalances and areas of your running form that you can correct in order to improve your running performance or prevent injury.
NEW RUNNERS: If you are beginning to run for the first time, learning proper running form is important to prevent injury from running. Additionally, understanding and addressing your muscular weakness and running form can prevent future injury INCREASING RUNNING
DISTANCE: If you’re training for a longer running event such as a half or full marathon, ensuring that you have proper form before increase your total running distance each week will help you prevent injury from the high impact of running as well as improve your performance
ELITE RUNNERS: A video running gait assessment can help identify small weaknesses in your running form that are hard to see without slow motion video analysis. Improving your running form will help you become a more efficient runner and improve your overall running performance.

Remember, this is just general information.
