How can exercise help with Hypertension?
Regular exercise helps increase the strength of the heart. A stronger heart is able to pump blood with less effort. Since pressure is relieved on your arteries, it lowers your blood pressure over time.
Physical activity can help control high blood pressure (hypertension) and also helps manage your weight, reduce stress, and strengthen your heart, all factors that help reduce high blood pressure.
—American Heart Association
Be smart about how you sweat!
During aerobic and resistance (strength training) exercise, your blood pressure temporarily increases to meet the demands your body requires to exercise. Blood pressure will return to normal rates after an exercise session. Over a long period of physical activity, the benefits of exercise will be an overall decrease in blood pressure levels.
It is important to exercise under the guidance of a professional who can monitor your blood pressure and help you begin to exercise safely. Physiotherapists and Kinesiologists are equipped with the knowledge to help people with medical conditions exercise safely. Always consult with your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
