How can exercise help with Fall Prevention?
Falls are the most common cause of injury among older adults in BC. According to the Government of British Columbia, one in three older adults (age 65+) will experience at least one fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and hospitalizations for BC seniors (BC Injury and Rehabilitation Unit). For seniors, 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls (BC Centre for Hip Health and Mobility). Falls can often be prevented, but many factors contribute to falls that occur in the home – these may include a lack of balance, dizziness, and weakness (BC Government).
Individually tailored exercise programs are proven to reduce falls and fall-related injuries.
