How do HIIT workouts work?
ROUND 9
Having had two very different but invaluable experiences with Patrick and Peter, I booked an appointment with Jack to see what his sessions were like.
Since my legs were sore from a workout previously in the week and had one scheduled for later today, we focused on strengthening the upper body. Jack also threw in a short 5 minute High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) session at the end. HIIT is a type of training where you give 100% of your energy for quick bursts of exercise, followed by brief rest periods. This method is said to increase your metabolism and burn more fat in less time.
One thing I noticed about Jack’s session was that he incorporated a variety of equipment into each exercise. Incorporating and simultaneously using equipment like the TRX, Strongboard, pushup bar, and Bosu Ball add a creative flare into his workouts. These extra elements made basic moves more challenging but also a lot more fun to do!

Physiotherapy and exercise don’t have to be a chore. Finding new ways to shake up your workout will offer exciting new challenges. After all, maintaining the same routine without increasing the reps or difficulty doesn’t help our bodies in the long run, as our muscles adapt through muscle memory and strengthening. Today’s appointment with Jack at Westcoast SCI introduced me to the fun side of HIIT workouts – I’m already looking forward to the next!
